Demystifying and Screening for Depression - Residential & Community

Purpose: RESIDENTIAL & COMMUNITY

This course is for all staff involved in clinical screening and assessment of residents and clients. The course has been designed to give participants the knowledge, skills and tools to effectively identify residents and clients suffering from depression. The appropriate use of the screening tools will assist facilities in accessing appropriate funding to enable the delivery of appropriate care.

Topics Covered

  • Understanding depression, its prevalence and its impact
  • Identifying signs and symptoms of depression in older people
  • Differentiating between depression, anxiety and dementia
  • Validated screening tools including the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia and the Geriatric Depression Scale
  • The importance of communication and team work in recognising signs and symptoms of depression
  • Appropriate referral methods to assist in interfacing with health care professionals

Target Audience

  • All staff responsible for the care of residents and clients.
