The course addresses the basic skills and knowledge required to be able to provide a person with physical assistance to take their medication as well as support people who are self-medicating.  The course comprises a two-day workshop, independent learning activities, and workplace assessments. 

Participants who successfully complete the assessment activities will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the Unit of Competency CHCCS305C: Assist clients with medication.

Pre-requisite
HLTAP301B: Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context, which can be completed via self-paced learning.

Content
  • Prepare to assist with medications 
  • Prepare the client for assistance with administration of medication 
  • Assist and support client with administration of medication 
  • Assist and support medication administration according to prescription and instructions 
  • Comply with organisational procedures 
  • Complete the distribution and administration of medication 

Assessment 
Participants must be working in a Residential Aged Care facility and nominate a Workplace Assessor. ACS will contact the Workplace Assessor to provide information regarding the workplace assessments. Alternative arrangements may be negotiated for facilities where there is not a suitable qualified Workplace Assessor.
  • Written Assessment activities will require completion in the workplace after the face to face component
  • Workshop attendance & participation in classroom activities
  • Written portfolio, including short answer questions and scenarios
  • Skills assessment in a simulated and workplace environment
  • Submission of completed assessment portfolios are due 28 days after attendance at the face to face component
